Squirrels

Welcome to our Forest school page.

This year we are working on our Hazel Tree wild passport levels.

follow our page to see and hear about our progress.

In Forest School today, Squirrel class had lots of fun creating soups and teas at our nature potion station, the addition of a bunch of flowers inspired lots of wonderful tea party play & a group of children utilised the stems to create a 'bee home'. The exciting new addition to our woodland site of a mud kitchen area was hugely popular! Squirrels loved exploring this mud area and created lots of different mud recipes together.

In Forest School today, squirrel class explored our woodland site, noting the changes in the seasons since their last session. They played a game to help them identify the different parts of a tree before moving on to creating some wonderful homes for the insects that live around our site. Squirrel class used our soft toy birds to help them identify different bird species, using our bird ID books to help them. Squirrels also enjoyed looking through our Usbourne nature books, learning all about bees and they also enjoyed playing with our nature snap cards.

In Forest School today squirrel class enjoyed using the iPads to photograph interesting icy objects, they found beautiful ice patterns on the fallen leaves and icicles dropping from the trees. Squirrels also used chalks and charcoals to sketch what they could see around them. We finished our session with a lovely hot chocolate with smiles all around.

29th November 2023

Today was very cold so squirrel class enjoyed playing lots of fun team games to warm up, before sitting down at the Viking ship to enjoy a lovely, warm hot chocolate together. Squirrels were then able to explore our wooded area, seeing what insects were still out even in the cold weather. They also continued building their tiny dens from the previous week and made nature soups and teas with natural items.

Today Squirrels played lots of team games to keep warm before being set a challenge to see if they could build a tiny den for our little woodland creatures. They set to work gathering all of their materials and made lots of different types of dens using sticks, leaves, pine cones and moss. Some of the dens had fenced gardens with paths and vegetable beds, others had swimming pools!

Today in Forest School squirrel class explored our new insect hotel area and using the ID books, identified the different insects, trees, types of seeds and leaf buds on our new site. The children were set a challenge to collect nature items and colour match them to coloured paper. Some of the children used their imaginations to see what games they could create with sticks, leading to some wonderful play. Squirrels also enjoyed playing with the ribbons, using these to create beautiful twirling shapes and seeing which direction the wind was blowing.

Today squirrel class played an identification game, we challenged them to find lots of different natural objects around our school field such as different coloured leaves, pine cones and sticks the same size as their hands. We then challenged them to find a leaf that was the same colour as their coat - this really got the children thinking and resulted in them finding lots of beautiful and very different coloured leaves, from the darkest brown to fiery red. During their free play time, squirrel class played hide and seek among the trees, hunted for insects and collected more beautiful natural objects. We also set up a tuff spot with our potion pots and some water and they created lots of wonderful soups, teas and potions using all of the leaves and conkers they had found.

Squirrel class have had a wonderful afternoon exploring our new temporary Forest School site today. They played a team game to help them learn which areas we could use and learnt to identify some new trees. Squirrels enjoyed collecting lots of beautifully coloured autumn leaves, they then created a beautiful leaf garland to hang on the fence. They collected lots of sticks to make their own imaginary camp fires and had lots of fun playing on the Viking ship.

Squirrel class were super excited to meet the new school chickens today - they arrived over the weekend to keep Lavender company. They sat and drew pictures of them all on paper and rocks.
They also found bears sleeping in the cave! The children decided to make new homes for them so we could have our cave back. However, Lavender the chicken did not seemed overly bothered by the bears!

3rd May 2023

This week the children were given the opportunity to use the Kings Coronation to inspire their forest school session. We think the king would be impressed with their creations, especially the portraits using nature.

Squirrel class had fun throwing Autumn leaves.
