Spring 1 Week 2

Literacy

In literacy this week we have been reading the non fiction book What Can Live in the Snow? The children have been finding out all about non fiction texts.  We have been looking at the features of a non fiction text such as a contents page, glossary and index as well as learning that it contains information rather than a story.   We have found out that it does not have to be read from the start to the finish but you can dip into different parts of it to find specific information.

Maths

In maths we have been looking at more and less.  The children enjoyed acting out number rhymes such as Five Little Speckled Frogs and Five Little Monkeys and counting and talking about it we had more or less each time we sang.

Understanding of the World

Our geography work this term is related to the cold regions of the world.  Our literacy text What Can Live in the Snow has introduced us to the animals and plants that live in cold places and we have been finding out how they survive in these harsh environments.

The children have been using globes and maps to find these cold places and we have been watching films showing us what these places are like.  In class discussions we have been talking about how these environments are different to where we live and comparing them to our country.

Expressive Art and Design

In art we have been looking at the artist David McEown who is a Canadian artist who paints in cold place in the world such as the Antarctic.  The children have loved looking at his paintings and we have watched some video clips of him painting in these remote places of the world.   David's paintings are amazing, you might like to have a look at some of his work and video clips on his website.  https://www.davidmceown.com/

The children have been experimenting with using watercolour paints, they have learnt how to do a watercolour wash and have explored using the paint to make darer and lighter shades of one colour.  They have then explored watercolour painting during their choosing time in EYFS.
