Forest school 2023-2024

Today Hedgehog class especially enjoyed playing with some bubbly water, this was a lovely way for the children to keep cool as they played in the shade under the trees whilst mixing, pouring and creating lots of fantastic bubbly concoctions. Hedgehog class used the pulley sets and built on their knowledge of how they work from last week to make some fantastic pulley systems. The children also enjoyed the mud kitchen, drawing in the shade and creating mini dens.

In today’s Forest School, Hedgehog class explored our new pulley sets, exploring how to use these and creating some amazing pulley systems and miniature zip-lines. Hedgehogs also had the opportunity to use the knot kits to learn how to tie various knots, which can be used for the pulley systems as well as the dens they create. Some of the children created some beautiful mini dens for ‘Forest Friends’, these included some beautiful details such as miniature dining tables made of bark, complete with a meal of wild cherries for the ‘Forest Friends’ to eat. Hedgehogs also enjoyed painting and playing in the mud kitchen, mixing up some delicious recipes such as leaf s’mores and a special Forest School hot chocolate, delicious!

Hedgehogs had a fantastic and very busy Forest School session today! They were given a special job of painting some wooden disks to look like bees and ladybirds, these will soon be added to the planters along the path to the school entrance. Hedgehog class enjoyed searching for insects again and making bug hotels and houses for them to live in. We had lots of fantastic mini dens being built, the children used their imaginations to create some truly amazing structures! Hedgehogs also enjoyed playing with bubbly water and used this pour, stir and measure, which is a great way to explore the properties of water and learn whilst playing.

In Forest School today Hedgehog class explored the woodland site to see what changes they could see with the change in season since their last visit. They discovered lots of different insects and we looked at the different species of snails that visit our site, what they like to eat and where the live. Hedgehogs enjoyed playing in the mud kitchen, which is a new addition to the site since their previous block of sessions - we were treated to some fantastic mud pies, cakes and teas! The children created some fantastic mini dens using the natural resources they found around the site, such as sticks, pine cones and moss.

What a fantastic last Forest School session Hedgehogs have had to finish their block. They made some beautiful clay pieces, creating detailed snakes, bowls, faces and even a jet plane! Some of the children made some wonderful dens and insect hotels, whilst others enjoyed playing at the potion station, where they created lots of concoctions such as apple pie, hot chocolate and drinks that turned the grown ups into frogs! We also had our very own Coningsby St Michael’s nature detectives, armed with their magnifying glasses and insect pots they explored our wooded area and found lots of different insects along with a very interesting chrysalis.

Today Hedgehogs went on a ‘senses walk’ around our school field and paid extra attention to all of the things they could see, hear, touch and smell whilst surrounded by nature. Hedgehog class explored an old tree trunk (a deadwood habitat) to see what might live within or near it, finding lots of signs of life. They explored the areas around our trees and collected items they thought were fascinating, as well as spotting some new insects and signs of Spring approaching.

Hedgehog class had a wonderful afternoon in Forest School, they enjoyed playing team games together and tested their knowledge of tree parts, whilst carefully navigating their way through the trees in our woodland area. We finished our session with a lovely hot chocolate.

Hedgehog class have had a wonderful Forest School session this afternoon, they started off with a fun bird-themed class game which was enjoyed by all. Hedgehogs then created some lovely bird feeders to hang in the trees and made some fantastic nests, fairy gardens and dens using natural objects. Then using our soft toy birds, the children studied the colours and patterns of each species of bird and used this to colour in their own picture using pastels, they created some wonderfully detailed pictures which perfectly capture the beauty of the birds we see all around us.

Hedgehog class have had a fantastic afternoon at Forest School, today’s session focused on birds in preparation for the RSPB Big Schools’ Bird Watch 2024. Hedgehogs enjoyed a class game of ‘birds and worms’ before moving onto their bird themed experiences. Hedgehog class learnt to identify different bird species using our bird ID books and our lovely Forest School soft toy birds. They then created lots of different types of birds nests for the birds using sticks, pinecones and other building materials.

Our past Forest School sessions.

28 June 2023

Hedgehogs have enjoyed playing with potions and making perfumes with the wildflowers growing in the mystical garden. They have also played a new game of ‘Hedgehogs’ and have been busy investigating the insects that live all around us.

Week 6

Week six was all about the Hot Chocolate (and a custard cream)

Week Five

This week the children in Hedgehog class made clay hedgehogs. They all worked really hard creating them and collecting little sticks to create their spikes. They also had a lovey time relaxing in the hammocks and using the nets to collect things that they found interesting.

Week 4

This week Hedgehog class were busy continuing to investigate minibeasts and identifying them using books. They enjoyed experimenting with different equipment to look closely at their minibeasts . We made sure that we treated them kindly and gently ensuring that we put them back exactly where we collected them from. The children also had lots of fun going Woodland skiing and showed great perseverance developing their archery skills.

Week 3

This week Hedgehog class enjoyed caramel apples around the campfire. Some of them were a bit nervous about cooking on the fire but showed real determination and all challenged themselves to do it. They all thought the apple was delicious. It was a great opportunity for the class to show off their fire etiquette skills and they all really impressed us.

Week 2

During Hedgehogs first forest school session we quickly learnt that we had a class that like to explore and hunt for Minibeasts so during their second forest school session there was really only one thing to do... Build a giant Bug Hotel!

First, they went on a nature walk around the school grounds and collected things that they could use to make our bug hotel, the children found lots of dried leaves, twigs and pinecones. After we had collected two big bucket full of things they headed back to the mystical garden to start the giant hotel. The children will observe this over the next few weeks to see how many visitors check in and what species they are.
