Children of the Armed Forces

Children of the Armed Forces

What is a service child:

A person whose parent/s or carer serves in the regular armed forces or a reservist or has done at any point during the first 25 years of that person’s life.

Welcome to our children of the armed forces page, I am Miss Williams the Pastoral Learning Mentor here at Coningsby St Michaels and part of my role is to support our Service children and their families with deployment, moving school and moving home and any other issues or concerns you may have. I also run our MKC Heroes Club after school where we do lots of different activities and the children get to share stories and talk about loved ones being away from home. Over the past year I have been working with several people on camp to build connections, who alongside school will help me in supporting the children.

RAF Coningsby

RAF Coningsby is located just 5 minute walk from the school, it is one of 2 RAF quick reaction alert stations. Home of 2 frontline, combat ready squadrons and the training station for Typhoon pilots. There are around 3,000 service personnel, civil servants and contacts that work on base.

STEM DAY

MKC Heroes

On Monday nights after school, we hold our MKC Heroes club which all service children are invited to attend. This is a time for the children to talk to one another if a loved one is deployed and a time for the children to have a bit of down time. Activities for the term are decided by the children and range from movie nights, baking, arts and crafts to visits from for personnel on camp. We also have our deployment bears which the children can take home and love to take care of.

MKC Council

This is something new here at Coningsby St Michael's, we are looking forward to getting it up and running. MKC Council is a group of children who all come from Military backgrounds and will be leading Collective Worship to share about their lives and gaining fellow service children's voice to determine f how we support the children in school and their families.

Lincolnshire Festival of Friends

We are proud to have been part of the Festival of Friends, a collaborative programme dedicated to supporting service children. This initiative focuses on developing and sharing best practices in education and pastoral care for service pupils. Through our participation, both pupils and staff had the opportunity to engage in meaningful learning experiences and strengthen our commitment to providing a supportive environment for service families. To learn more about our journey check out our Festival of Friends Project Booklet.
