Week 1 - What is multiplication

The children have started their maths learning this term with multiplication. Children started off by splitting cubes into equal groups and then describing what they had done. They used the phrases, 4 groups of 2, 4 lots of 2, then 4 x 2. They will also show what they know about multiplication using repeated addition, part whole and bar models. By the end of year 2 children should know their 2's, 5's, and 10 times tables and all associated facts including division facts.

Week 2 - Can I learn my 2's, 5's and 10 times tables?

This week in maths, children have been learning how to multiply 2, 5 and 10. They went to the playground and wrote out the 10 times tables and made arrays to represent them.

Week 3 - What is division?

This week we will be learning the inverse or opposite of multiplication, division. We started off by looking at sharing. Children were given an amount to share between groups such as, 'share 20 cubes between 5 groups. They had to draw how many groups there are, 5, and then share the amount between them so 20. They the looked at how many they had in each group to get the answer. This led to them writing 20 shared between 5 groups = 4 each.

Week 4 - Can I solve problems using division?

This week children will be using what they know about sharing and grouping to divide to solve worded problems. They started off by grouping to learn the division facts for the 10 times tables.
