Can I go on a minibeast hunt?

Children have started their learning this term on Living Things and their Habitats by going on a minibeast hunt, we are learning about living things and their habitats and thinking about the different seasons at the same time. We discovered that there aren't many minibeasts around at this time because it is too cold, however we did still find spiders, slugs, snails, centipedes and woodlice. We are looking forward to the warmer months to find butterflies, ladybirds too.

What is the best material for a child's dungarees?

This week in science we have been looking at different fabrics. We had a selection of fabrics including cotton, denim, silk, wool, polyester and viscose so we came up with our own questions to investigate. We put our questions through the question machine to check that it was scientific and that we could use fair testing as our enquiry. We then used a stone to replica a child's knee then counted how many times it would take for the material to rip if a child fell over wearing them. We discovered that denim would be the most suitable material and that silk would be the least suitable.

This week children have been using their learning in English about Rapunzel to put their STEM skills to the test! They were given a selection of materials and had to build a contraption to help her escape from her tower. There were some great ideas and structures built!

Can I build a contraption to help Rapunzel escape?

Children are continuing with their learning of materials this term, they started by looking at the materials balls are made from and what made them bouncy. They tested 5 different balls to see which was the bounciest and why. They learnt that the football was the bounciest because it is made from rubber which is elastic to allow the ball to bounce and then go back to its original shape.
