Coningsby St Michael's Church of England Primary School

Believe. Aspire. Succeed.

Our Church School Values

School Vision

As Jesus welcomes and values children, we at St Michael’s aspire to welcome and value all members of our community. We believe that this welcome and value provides opportunities for all to succeed.

Matthew 18: 2-5

Collective Worship

We enjoy a daily act of collective worship, in many different ways, sometimes as a whole school, key stage and with our own class. We particularly enjoy having visitors to lead our worship including Reverend Sally from St Michael's Church,  Padre Chrissie and the Open the Book team, led by Sandra Hulme.

Our Church School Values

The six Church School Values we are learning about this year are:

  • Friendship
  • Perseverance
  • Compassion
  • Thankfulness
  • Forgiveness
  • Truthfulness

Reserved Teachers:

What is a Reserved Teacher?
1. Section 58 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 requires the appointment in
Voluntary controlled (VC) schools, or an academy that was previously a VC school, of teachers who are able to provide religious education in accordance with the requirements of the Trust Deed of the school or in accordance with the tenets of the relevant religion or denomination.

2. Where the number of teachers at a foundation or voluntary-controlled school with a religious character is more than two, the teachers must include persons who are selected for their fitness and competence to teach religious education in accordance with the school’s trust deed or with the tenets of the school’s religion and are specifically appointed to do so.

3. These teachers are called Reserved Teachers.

What is denominational religious education?
4. There is no definition in the Act of denominational religious education but in practice it means any religious education provided in accordance with the requirements of the Trust Deed of the school and that is not the Locally Agreed Syllabus. Reserved Teachers may of course teach the Agreed Syllabus but that is not the purpose of their status.

Why is the provision of denominational religious education required?
5. Because parents have the right to request it. The norm in VC Church of England schools is that RE is provided according to the Locally Agreed Syllabus. Reserved Teachers are not needed for this. However, parents may request denominational religious education and the governing body must make it available. Reserved Teachers are appointed in order that suitable persons are available should parents request this provision.

At Coningsby St Michael's Church of England School, our Reserved Teachers are tbc

Our Church School Value for this Term is:

Perseverance

Our Big Questions:

What is perseverance?

Why is it important not to give up?

Is it easy to persevere?

Why should we encourage others to persevere?

Our Bible focus this term is:

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

Reverend Sally led Collective Worship today and we reflected on Compassion at Christmas.

Coningsby St Michael's remembers...

On Remembrance day we lay wreaths, that we had made in our classes, in our peace garden. We shared poems, prayers and had a moment of silence to remember.

Our school council members were invited to the Service of Remembrance at RAF Coningsby where they lay a wreath on behalf of the school.

Padre Chrissie joined us to lead a worship on Perseverance. She shared the story of Nehemiah building the wall up around Jerusalem. Padre Chrissie had the staff and children involved in the worship. Staff were Jerusalem's city wall and had to collapse. The children in EYFS then had to throw 'rocks' at Padre Chrissie who was rebuilding the wall! Then half of the school became builders and half were soldiers defending the builders. The story showed us that with perseverance and by working together as a team we can accomplish anything! A big thank you to Padre Chrissie for inspiring us.

Reverend Sue led us in a Holy communion service at Church today. She taught us all about what happens in this special service.

Imam Ali led a worship on Perseverance. He read a passage from the Qur'an in Arabic about Ramadan and the need for persevering when you are fasting from sunrise to sunset. He explained how he found it hard watching his colleagues eat and drink during the day. His faith and perseverance ensures he is able to complete his fasting. The children had so many questions to ask him We can't wait for him to join us in school again soon.

We are so happy to have our Open the Book group back in school after 2 and half years. The children loved your costumes and how you share Bible stories in a fun and interactive way.

Another great collective worship with the Open the Book team this morning. This time, the story of the kind stranger. Children enjoyed joining in with the story telling too.
