  • Squirrels

Welcome to our Forest school page 2025-2026

This school year we are working on our Hazel Tree wild passport.

Squirrel Class took part in a wonderful Forest School sessions this term focused on learning all about squirrels and their habitats. The children began by discussing what they already knew about squirrels, sharing ideas about how they move, what they eat, and where they live.

During their exploration of the woodland area, the children searched carefully for signs of squirrel activity. They discovered a range of exciting clues, including:

    • Possible food stores, such as nibbled pinecones and cracked nutshells.
    • Dreys (squirrel nests) high up in the branches, which prompted great conversation about how squirrels build and protect their homes.
    • Tracks and pathways, which the children observed on the ground and imagined how squirrels might travel through the trees.

The children used their observation skills brilliantly, working together to decide what each clue might mean. They showed lots of curiosity and enthusiasm as they explored.

Alongside their squirrel investigation, the class also enjoyed the continuous provision available within the Forest School site. This included:

    • Mud kitchen play, where children worked collaboratively to create imaginative “potions” and recipes using natural materials.
    • Construction and den-building, using sticks, logs, and leaves to build shelters and structures.
    • Sensory exploration, such as feeling different textures, listening for wildlife sounds, and investigating natural objects.

The session provided a wonderful balance of learning, creativity, problem-solving, and outdoor fun. The children demonstrated great teamwork and engagement throughout, and we are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm for exploring the natural world.
