Citrus Explosion

Miss Yarsley models how to use the knife carefully...then below you will see the children have a go in small groups..

Today during the citrus volcano experiment the children were asked to predict what they thought might happen before hand.

The experiment used 3 ingredients only - one piece of citrus fruit (we used orange, lemon and grapefruit today), bicarbonate of soda and an optional item - food colouring.

As the experiment was going on Miss Yarsley recorded some of the things the children said:

"Cause theres wet stuff in it' RP

"Something when you put baking soda and fruit it goes big" GA

"It turns into elephant toothpaste." ER

"Because its sour" SB

"I think it is something with baking soda that will make it explode" RS

"I think cause the amount of dye it exploded" TR

"Cause this is sour" JS

"This errm soda is just really fizzy it makes it really fizzy" HC

"Foamy" CM

"Thats faster...lemon" SB

The children noticed the lemon was the fruit that reacted the best with the bicarb of soda. They found it fasinating and enjoyed adapting the colours into the different fruits.

RP said "Can I try it with an apple?" , SG said "Can I do this at home?" , HW "I love that...its sooo cool, can we do it again?"
